Use of clean glassware is crucial for efficacy and efficiency of chemical reactions or biological processes. It is the ke y to success of an y experiment. Use of dir ty glass ware can lead to cross contamination of chemicals thereb y leading to erroneous results. Cleaning of glassware should be an integral part of the good laborator y practices and should be followed by each member of the lab after each use. New glassware is slightly alkaline in reaction. Hence, it should be soaked for about 2 to 3 hours in acidic water (1% solution of hydr ochloric acid or nitric acid). Rinse with water and then soak the empty glassware in a basin / tub containing suitable cleaning agent / solution for 20 to 30minutes. DID YOU KNOW ? Cleaning agents : • W ater/Purified water/warm water – Routine cleaning of all glassware • Soaps/ detergent solution - Routine cleaning of all glassware • Cleaning powders with/without abrasives – For exceptionally dir ty glasswar e • Acetone/Solvents - Glassware with gr easy, sticky, waxy materials and glassware containing water immiscible solvents • Hot nitric acid – glassware containing cloudy pr ecipitates and coagulated organic matter, glassware required for TOC analysis NOTE : After use of any of the cleaning agents, other than water, glassware should be rinsed and cleaned with water as per the standard laborator y procedure DO'S AND DON'TS OF CLEANING DO'S Do not use a metallic scrubber or a brush with metallic bristles for cleaning Do not use str ong alkalis for cleaning Do not use chromic acid and sulphuric acid mixture for cleaning as it is hazardous and toxic in nature DON'T’S Remove the content of glassware before washing Remove all markings / sticker labels fr om the glassware. Use a suitable cleaning agent depending upon the type o f dirt Use a good quality brush for cleaning Af ter applying the cleaning agents always rinse the glasswar e first with tap water and finally with purified water Recommended temperature for dr ying o f glassware is 60⁰C - 100⁰C Bring glassware to ambient temperature before cleaning, if they ar e subjected to heating or cooling during analysis Soak the glassware in the cleaning agent for about half an hour before cleaning CLEANING OF GLASSWARE
